Not so long ago, pearl jewelry and especially pearl rings and necklaces were the kind of things you might associate with the more mature woman; people like your grandmother. But in recent years the pearl ring has made an astonishing comeback. The usual catalyst for such renaissances in fashion is the celebrity. Once an A-lister has been snapped by the paparazzi wearing an exotic black pearl ring, everybody thinks pearls are cool again, and they rush to the stores to pick up their own version.
The really great thing about pearl jewelry is that the price tags range so widely there is undoubtedly something to satisfy everybody, whatever their budget. The days when false pearls looked shockingly bad have long gone, and nowadays the genuine ones can be created easily using seeding processes. This means there is a far better supply now than ever before, and they range from the very small cultured ones which are relatively inexpensive, to the naturally occurring ones which sell for a very high price. So for people who want to buy pearl engagement rings for the love of their life, it is easy to do now without having to resort to buying worthless man-made ones.
There are several factors which affect the value of a pearl. Natural ones are far rarer, since they are produced in the wild purely accidentally. These usually grow for longer and can therefore be larger, and have fewer flaws in them. As you might imagine, large, perfectly round pearls are ideal for a lavish pearl ring, and these are the kind you will probably only ever dream about or see on the hand of very wealthy individuals.
Surprisingly for some people, pearls can be obtained in a whole range of different colors, from the familiar white and cream ones, to green, blue and pink ones, and the increasingly popular black pearls. So if you have a love of pearl rings and want to buy one, you’ll need to know your budget, and then ask yourself a few questions. Do I want natural or induced pearls? What color do I want? What size of pearl?
Remember also that a pearl on its own isn’t a pearl ring; you will need to consider which metal you want for the band – yellow or white gold, sterling silver or even platinum. If you are happy with the far less expensive sterling silver band, then you will be able to afford a bigger pearl, or maybe a better color, or even push the boat out and opt for a natural one instead of a “farmed” one. And if you buy wholesale jewelry pearls, the price can be cut in half.
One thing is for sure; pearl rings are back, and they are stunningly attractive pieces of jewelry for all ages now. They are certainly no longer just for granny!
